The Experiences of Older LGBTQI2S+

My name is Jess and I am a research assistant at the University of Guelph, working with a team of investigators (Drs. Kim Wilson, Arne Stinchcombe and Kathy Kortes-Miller) on a research project that aims to develop a better understanding of the LGBTQI2S+ older adults' experience of aging in Canada. In particular, we are interested in identifying any barriers and facilitators to participating in society. As such, we are looking to for participants who identify as aging (60 years and older) LGBTQI2S+ Canadians that may be able to attend a focus group in Toronto, on April 20 (from 11:00am to 1:00pm).

This project has been reviewed by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Guelph for compliance with federal guidelines for research involving human participants (REB#16NV050; H-05-17-19; REB #026 17-18). The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) has funded this project.

Should you wish to participate, you will be asked to engage in one focus group with 6-8 other individuals for approximately 2 hours in duration. Partner organizations and voluntary participants will be provided with a de-identified summary of the results. Focus group participants will also be reimbursed for their travel costs (up to $10.00 with a valid receipt) and provided with a lunch during the focus group.

Please find an information letter outlining our project and our recruitment poster at fb.me/LGBTQ60. If you have any questions or wish to volunteer, please contact me by email at jboule@uoguelph.ca or by calling 519-824-4120 (extension 53003).

Hello everyone! The Rekai Centres Long Term Care Homes has embarked on an inclusivity journey, and as such is considering the possible creation of a dedicated 25 bed unit for the LGBTQ2SI+ Community. They are in the research phase of this project and are conducting a survey to collect input that will inform and guide their next steps. Please take 5 minutes to complete this survey! It is an exciting opportunity to help set the standard for LGBTQ2SI+ spaces and services in healthcare, which is especially relevant as the population is seeing an increase in aging. Every voice matters! Thank you!
